人に対する感謝

ここでは、一般的な著者が複数の原著論文 (生物学分野) の謝辞の書き方をまとめます。学位論文では主語を I にするなど、適宜調整して解釈して下さい。

謝辞は単数形 Acknowledgment ではなく複数形 Acknowledgments になる。また、イギリス英語では Acknowledgements であるので、イギリス系の雑誌では e を入れている。

「感謝する」文例を中心に

まずは、謝辞の文章の前半に来るであろう「感謝する」の表現と、どのように「人」に感謝するかを中心にまとめる。ページの下方で、helpful discussions など「どの行為」に対して感謝するかについてまとめる。

Dr. *** など、特定の人に感謝する場合。とくに Dr. などの敬称をつけずに、We thank Barack Obama for ... などとしている論文も多く、失礼には当たらないようだが、Dr. であることがわかっている場合には敬称をつけておく方が無難だろう。

• We express our sincere thanks to Dr. *** for ... (ここまで書いている例は少ない)
• We are grateful to Dr. *** for helpful discussions ... (これぐらいが普通)
• We would like to thank Dr. *** for...

まとめて感謝する場合は Drs. として良いようだ。

• We thank Drs. *** and *** for ...

研究室のメンバーに感謝している例。

• We gratefully acknowledge the work of past and present members of our laboratory ... (1).

通常は Reviewer に感謝する必要はないが、論文に対して重要な suggestion をもらったと思ったときは謝辞に入れても良いかもしれない。しかし、雑誌によってはこれをしないように求めている場合もある。

• The authors wish to thank H. Rosenthal and the anonymous reviewers for comments on earlier version of this paper (2).

何に感謝するか

Discussion やベクター供与などが一般的だろう。なお、

• ... for helpful discussions and comments on the manuscript.
• ... for generously providing us with fly strains (5).

予算 funding に対する感謝

科研費の英語標記を検索すると、いろいろな大学が作っているリストがみつかるが、ここはやはり本家である 学振の HP を参考にすべきだろう。以下に転載させて頂く。情報が古くなっているかもしれないので、学振または文科省のサイトでチェックしてほしい。

面白い謝辞

謝辞でプロポーズ!?

公私混同のような気がしてあまり好きではないが、学位論文の謝辞では、家族や恋人への感謝をしているケースもよくみられる。これを原著論文でやってしまい、さらにプロポーズまでした例もある (3)。

• C.M.B. would specifically like to highlight the ongoing and unwavering support of Lorna O’Brien. Lorna, will you marry me?

お気に入りの研究者ブログ、アレ待チろまんにて発見。

感謝していない謝辞

Funding に対しては、単なる感謝だけではない複雑な感情をもっている研究者が多いだろう。そのような感情を吐露してしまった例がいくつかある (4)。面白かったものを挙げてみる。

イタリアのグラントに対する謝辞。ostensibly は 「表面上は、うわべは」 という意味。 採択されたが、支払いが行われなかったことに対する怒りを表明している。

アメリカの主要な funding もとである NSF が実験系の申請をリジェクトし続けたため、theoretical work の論文を出さなければならなくなったという恨み節。

意地悪なコメントに対する謝意？を直接的に表明しているものもある。英語では passive-aggressive nods と言うようだ。
