基本の英単語: 問題の種類など

まずは基本となる英単語。試験は test または exam で、簡単な小テストのようなものは quiz という。

授業の試験ではなく、アンケートのようなものは questionnaire である。このあたりの単語の意味を英英辞典 (2) で整理しておく。もちろん多くの意味が辞典に載っているが、「試験」という意味で関連しそうなものをピックアップした。

選択問題、計算問題などに相当する単語もまとめておく。

そのほか関連表現。

選択問題

文例を中心にまとめる。カッコの中の数字は Google 検索のヒット件数である。検索した日によって値は変わるはずだが、傾向に大きな違いはないと思うので、検索日を書くのはやめにした。

日本語の選択問題でも「正しい答えを選べ」よりも「もっともよく当てはまるものを選べ」のように曖昧さを残しておいた方が、クレームに答えやすいという状況がある。このような意味で、さまざまな表現で使われるのが likely や best という単語である。

• Which of the following best explains ... (4,240 hits)

選択肢から正しい答えを選べ

「正しい答えを選べ」という表現には、以下のようなものがある。

命令形のパターン。correct answer や correct statement という言葉が使われる。Statement を使う場合は following を伴う場合が多く、choices を使う例ではヒットがあまりない。

1. Select the correct answer from the choices given (3,380 hits).
2. Select the correct answer from the choices below (1,210 hits).
3. Select the correct answer from the alternatives (13,300 hits).
4. Select the correct answer from the list below (4,560 hits).
5. Select the correct statement from the following (6,970 hits).
6. Select the wrong statement from the following (970 hits).

Which を使って疑問文にするパターン。following の次に来る語は 複数形 になるようだ。

割合を尋ねるなど、様々なシチュエーションがあるがとりあえず列挙する。緑の部分は多数のヒットがあった部分である。

2. Which of the following is classified as a ketone body?
3. Which of the following elements has three protons?
4. What percentage of hemoglobin is bound with carbon dioxide in the venous system?

true という言葉を使うときは、of を伴う場合が多いようである。少し直感に反するが、"Which statement is true of" は 10 万件以上のヒットがある (Dec 2018)。

当てはまるものを全て選べ

マッチング問題

たとえば以下のような表と選択肢があって、言葉に対応する選択肢を入れるような問題。Match という動詞を使うようだ。このような問題では、「用語」は word でなく term を使う。

1. Match the appropriate definition to each *** (8,430 hits).
2. Match the appropriate term to (10,300 hits).
3. Match the appropriate term with (3,800 hits; to の方が良さそう).
4. Match the appropriate word with (8 hits; to でもほとんどヒットなし).

選択肢

1. タンパク質をリン酸化する酵素
2. タンパク質を脱リン酸化する酵素

穴埋め問題 (実際に単語を書き入れる)

1. Fill in the blanks with appropriate words (13,000 hits).

同じ言葉が複数の部分に入るときは、The same word fills both blanks という注意書きをつけると良さそうだ。

提示された選択肢から選んで穴埋めをするときは、

1. Fill in the blank with an appropriate word from the following options.

などがあるが、ヒット数が少ない。

記述問題

例 (定義) を挙げよ

1. Provide an example and briefly explain...
2. What is convergent evolution? Give an example. (ある教科書の章末問題)

4. Give an example of such a ... (多数ヒット)。

Provide または Give を使うようである。Such との組み合わせは、まだどの言葉が良いのかよくわからない。少なくとも上記 4 のような表現が多数ヒットし、such のあとは単数形になるようである。

「挙げよ」は answer を思いつくが、provide でなく answer を使う例は検索してもあまりヒットしない。

定義 definition は「唯一のもの」という感じがするので the を使いたくなるが、実際はほとんどのケースで a が使われている。確かに、言葉の定義は教科書や辞書によって異なっており、その中の一つを答えてもらうことになるので、a の方が正しいのだろう (参考: aとtheの物語, Amazon link)。

・・の名前を答えよ

動詞としては、write, provide, give などがよく使われる。構造式を示して名前を答えさせる場合は、答えがほぼ一意に定まるので、単純に write the name of... で OK だろう。

2. Provide the name of the ...

なお、物質名を答えさせる場合は、molecule でなく compound が使われる。Molecule は 1 つまたはそれ以上の元素から成る化合物、compound は複数の元素から成る化合物であり、molecule の方が広い言葉である。

1. Write the name of the compound (262,000 hits)
2. Write the name of the compound (65,600 hits だが、実際はわずか)
3. Write the name of the molecule that is described by each clue.

一方、イラストを示して構造の名前を答えさせる場合には、クレームを避けるために Write the name that best describes the structure A などという表現にしておくと無難だろう。

簡潔に説明せよ

Briefly explain が基本だが、explanation という名詞を使いたい場合には 可算名詞 として使うことに注意する。

1. Provide brief explanation about... (1,060 hits)
2. Provide a brief explanation about... (27,200 hits)

例を挙げて説明、などのバリエーション。

1. Explain with an appropriate example (~200 hits): 適切な例を挙げて。
2. Explain *** with a clear statement about the role (~70 hits) of ***: 記述問題で、特定のキーワードについて詳細な記述を求める場合。
3. Provide a reason for your choice (~165 hits): 何かを選択させて、理由を述べさせる場合。
4. No credit will be given if you... 「得点を与えない」という表現。

略称は何に由来するか

1. What does DNA stand for?

stand for は「支持する、賛成する、立候補する、我慢する」など多様な意味をもつ熟語であるが、「略語などが〜を表す」という意味もある。上の文章は DNA という略語が何に由来するかを尋ねている。
