doubt と suspect の違い

doubt と suspect は、どちらも「疑う」と訳されるが、ニュアンスに違いがある。一番簡単な覚え方は、suspect は think に、doubt は don't think に言い換えられる であろう (1)。

もう少し、それぞれの単語を詳しく見てみよう。

doubt

Oxoford English dictionary によると、doubt の基本的な意味は「確かでないこと」 feel uncertain about で、さらに以下のような追加説明がついている。

1. Question the truth or fact of
2. Disbelieve (a person or their word)
3. Feel uncertain, especially about one's religious beliefs

3 番目の意味で使われる場合には、目的後をとらないようだ。

suspect

これに対して、suspect は Have an idea or impression of the existence, presence, or truth of (something) without certain proof と書かれている。

つまり、何かが「ある」ことを疑うのは suspect と言ってもいいかもしれない。
