概要
このページでは、「構成する、~を成す」という意味の 5 つの動詞について、用法やニュアンスの違いを解説する。まずは下の表に概要をまとめ、さらに個々の単語について 科学論文 から例を拾って解説していく予定。
consist |
A consists of B and C で、「A が B および C から構成される」という意味になる。 単純に構成要素を示すニュアンスであり、また「B および C 以外に A の構成要素がない」という含意があるようだ (1)。 動詞 consist は intransitive であり、受動態になることはできない (英語掲示板)。 |
compose |
consist は「構成される」だが、compose は「構成する」である。したがって、A consists of B and C と同じ内容を表現したい場合、受動態 A is composed of B and C となる。 上記の be consisted of という誤用は、compose との混乱からきていると思われる。 consist に加えて、各構成要素が何らかの過程を経てあるものを構成する、というちょっと複雑なニュアンスもあるらしい (1)。 |
constitute |
A constitutes B では、構成要素というよりは A = B というニュアンスがある (1)。 |
comprise |
多くの場合において consist of と近い意味だが、include の同義語と考えることもできる (1)。つまり A comprises of B and C で、「A が B および C から構成される」という意味である。 ゆえに、is consisted of が誤用であるのと同様に この英語のページには、comprise は contains, is made up of, embraces の意味であり、受動態は comprises または is composed of とされるべきであると書かれている (3)。

consist of の用法: 論文での実例
A consists of B and C で「A が B および C から構成される」というのが基本であり、この意味を表すために A is consisted of B and C とするのは誤用である (2)。
> 関係代名詞を使って、A, which consists of B, is... というのもよくあるパターン。
