基本的な使い方

オンライン Oxford 辞書では、respectively は

Separately or individually and in the order already mentioned (used when enumerating two or more items or facts that refer back to a previous statement):

と説明されている (1)。つまり、先行して複数の項目が並べられているときに、あとにくる項目と順番を個別に対応させるときに使う。したがって、次の 1 の文章に respectively がないと、二人合わせてオレンジとモモを持っていることになり、誰が何を持っているか確定しないことになる (2)。

  1. John and Susan have oranges and peaches, respectively.
  2. Black, white and gray arrowheads indicate hippocampus, thalamus and cerebellum, respectively.

2 のように、項目が 3 つ以上に増えても使うことができる。以下に、間違った使い方を挙げてみる。

  1. John has oranges ans Susan has apples, respectively. 既に対応関係が明らかになっている (2)。
  2. I gave some oranges to John and Mary, respectively. 2 つのものが先行していない (3)。

コンマの有無

コンマは、リストが長くならない限りは省略も可能であるが、原則として respectively の前につけることになっている。

先行する項目が two などでまとめられている場合

少し迷うのは、先行する項目が two, three などでまとめられているときである。

  • The three men were 5, 6, and 8 feet tall, respectively.

意味としては respectively がついても良さそうな気がするが、以下の論文添削サイトでは間違いとしている (4)。The term "respectively" is only used when you are comparing two lists in sequence ... 中略... If you do not have two lists, then respectively should not be used.

先行する項目は単数か複数か

この疑問は、次のような文章を想定したものである。

  • The temperatures in Tokyo and New York are 30 and 25°C, respectively.

この場合、主語の temperature は 可算名詞 と考え、temperatures となるのが自然なようである。respectively がつくということは、東京とニューヨークの気温を別々のものとして捉えているわけで、これらを別個に考えるために temperature が可算名詞として使われるようになる、と解釈する。
